Facebook's new photo app 'leaks' online
A new Facebook application could be set to make uploading pictures easier, if a leading technology website's leaks are accurate
A new Facebook photosharing application could be about to be released, according to documents apparently seen by TechCrunch.
The new application enhances uploading, tagging and sharing photos via Facebook and appears to incorporate a number of the elements that have been behind the success of popular photosharing applications such as Instagram and Color.
TechCrunch highlights “the location elements, likes and comments, multi-picture mode, filters, multi-user albums, face-tagging, and more”.
Facebook is the largest photosharing website in the world, despite pictures not being the social network’s main purpose. It currently stores almost than 100billion images.
New applications to share photographs have become popular recently in part due to improved cameras, but also thanks to Facebook’s own relatively unsophisticated way of handling mobile uploads.
Although the new app is apparently built for the iPhone, some of the elements seen in TechCrunch’s extensive screenshots clearly have much in common with the mobile version of the site, m.facebook.com. This would be in line with Facebook’s stated commitment to the use of HTML5, which would make building a version for other platforms easier.
The website claims that internally the new app is being called “Hovertown” or “WithPeople”. It also raised the possibility of Facebook developing separate apps for using the site generally and for uploading pictures.
