Sony tablets to launch in Britain 'in September'

Sony’s two tablet computers will launch in Britain in September, according to leaked information.

However, gadget blog Engadget reports seeing “a private note sent from Sony’s marketing group” that gives a release date of late September for at least one of Sony’s tablets.
The note said that Sony, John Lewis and a third retailer will stock the device when it launches in Britain, with more retailers to follow.
The Sony S1 is a 9.4-inch tablet with a curved back that the company says makes it easier to hold. The S2, meanwhile, has a ‘clamshell’ design that folds open to reveal two 5.5-inch screens. Both tablets will run on Google’s Android operating system and will be compatible with PlayStation games.
Sony has taken its time to enter the tablet market, with rival companies such as Samsung and Asus having been quicker to follow Apple’s iPad to market. RIM, the BlackBerry manufacturer, has launched its own tablet, the PlayBook, in Britain this week.
Though Sony would appear to be well placed to support a tablet, having established its multimedia Qriocity streaming service on the PS3 and launched its Reader series of ebook devices, the company’s reputation has taken a knock after the PlayStation Network hacking attack.
At last week’s E3 games exhibition in Los Angeles, Sony apologised for the incident before going on to announce its new handheld games console, the PlayStation Vita.
